Mama Africa or King of Queens, whichever you choose to call Yemi Alade, we’re pretty sure she’ll answer both.

Yemi won the best female category at the MTV Base Africa Music Awards this year and this is the second consecutive year which lends credence to the obvious fact that she’s doing something right. She sat down with Alex Macpherson, a writer at Fader to discuss (You can check the full interview here).
Here are five things we about Yemi until after her interview:
1. Her father is a police commissioner
Yemi Alade’s father was a commissioner of police until his death.

2. She’s a multi-linguist
Her dad is Yoruba and her mom is Igbo and so she speaks both languages. She is stuck on French and is working on Swahili and hopes to learn Portuguese.

3. Her latest work ‘Mama Africa’ was a goal to capture the whole of Africa on one CD
After the release of her first album, she kept on travelling and so, through her struggle, her thought process turned into a goal: to capture all of Africa on one CD

4. Her Johnny song was actually leaked
Johnny, her numero uno song which was about a cheating lover in an almost friendly way was released in 2014. As at when she was making the song, she had no idea that she was writing.

5. She’s not interested in politics
When asked if her household was political when she was growing up, she replied that he wasn’t a very political person, and he never held any political office or anything like that. She went on to mention that she was not very interested in politics too.
